1. 개요

1990년 4월 13일에 출시된 그린데이의 데뷔 앨범.[1]

2. 상세

초창기 밴드의 드러머였던 존 키프마이어(John Kiffmeyer)가 참가한 유일한 스튜디오 앨범이며, 그린데이가 처음으로 북미 전국 투어를 돌기 시작한 앨범이기도 하다. 앨범의 커버아트는 당시 그린데이가 활동하던 캘리포니아 버클리의 'DIY 924 Gilman Street' 펑크 씬에서 인기 있었던 밴드 '오퍼레이션 아이비(Operation Ivy)'의 보컬 제시 마이클스(Jesse Michaels)에게 도움을 받았으며, 음반 재킷의 글씨는 빌리 조 암스트롱의 글씨라고 한다. 인디 레코드 회사 'Lookout!'의 열악한 녹음환경 때문에 앨범 자체의 음질은 썩 좋지 않으나 그걸 감안하고 들어도 잘 된 곡들이 꽤 있다.

약 1년 뒤인 1991년 7월 1일 발행된 컴필레이션 앨범 《1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours》[2]는 그린데이의 데뷔 앨범 《1,000 Hours》과 이 앨범, 그리고 이 앨범과 같은 해 발행된 EP 앨범인 《Slappy》가 함께 수록되어있다.[3]

참고로 이 앨범은 1990년에 단종되었다. 그래서 1991년에 리이슈 된 것이 바로 위의 컴필레이션 앨범 《1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours》인데, 그렇기에 이 1집 앨범의 판매 집계 기록을 논할 때는 보통 《39/Smooth》의 최종 집계 기록인 8만 장에 《1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours》의 현재 진행형 판매 기록을 더하는 식으로 계산해야한다. 사정이 이러하다 보니 잘 모르는 사람들은 《39/Smooth》이 아니라 《1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours》이 그린데이의 1집 앨범인 줄 아는 경우가 많다. 여하튼 이 1집 앨범은 2014년 집계된 기록을 기준으로 미국 내에서만 96만 장[4] 이상의 판매고를 기록하며 RIAA 인증 Gold를 달성하였다.

[1] 참고로 그린데이의 데뷔 음반은 1989년에 나온 《1,000 Hours》라는 EP 앨범이다. [2] 이 앨범을 그린데이의 1집으로 취급하기도 한다. [3] 그래서 제목이 10(00)+39/Smooth(ed Out)+Slappy+Hours 인 것(...). [4] 《39/Smooth》 8만 장 + 《1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours》 88만 장. [5] 여기서는 '마약하는 날'이라는 의미가 강하다. 애초에 밴드명 'Green Day'가 마리화나와 관련된 이름이란 걸 생각해보면 놀랍지 않다(...). [6] 여기에서 Pasalacqua는 장례식장의 이름이라고 한다.
