1. 개요
영국의 밴드 페이퍼 레이스가 1974년 6월 15일에 발매한 싱글이며 이들의 2집 Paper Lace의 두번째 싱글이다.2. 특징
이들의 대표곡이다. 제목의 의미는 ' 시카고가 죽은 밤'. 노래가 시작될 때 사이렌 소리가 울리며 뭔가 큰 사건이 터진 것을 암시한다. 가사는 1920 ~ 1930년대 사이 미국 시카고를 중심으로 악명을 떨친 이탈리아 출신의 갱단 두목 알 카포네가 이끄는 갱단과 시카고 경찰 간에 벌어진 가상의 총격전을 겪은 화자가 회상하는 내용이다.1929년 2월 시카고에서 알카포네가 이끄는 갱단이 라이벌 갱단을 상대로 ' 성 발렌타인 데이 학살'이라 불리는 살육을 벌인 적은 있지만, 이 노래에서처럼 실제 알 카포네의 갱단과 경찰 사이에 대규모 총격전이 벌어졌던 적은 없다. 실제 성 발렌타인 데이 학살 사건에서는 알 카포네의 갱단이 상대편 갱단의 조직원 7명을 살상하는 데 그쳤으며, 경찰은 신고를 받은 뒤에 도착해서 수습했을 뿐이었다.
작곡가 Peter Callender와 Mitch Murray는 인터뷰에서 갱스터 영화에서 얻은 영감과 자기 상상을 바탕으로 가사를 썼다고 한다. 실제로 가사의 내용과 달리 시카고 동쪽은 미시간 호수인지라 근교지역이 없다.
